In recent years, the environmental performance of household products has received increasing attention, and standards for environmental protection have been introduced one after another. This year, two environmental standards have been introduced, one is the “Technical Requirements for Environmental Labeling Products – Furniture” issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and the other is the “Limits of Hazardous Substances in Finished Furniture and Raw and Auxiliary Materials” issued by Shenzhen. The improvement of standardization will play a great role in promoting the environmental protection of the home furnishing industry.
Under strict environmental protection regulations, a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises have failed to meet the standards and are in danger
According to people familiar with the matter, the home furnishing industry in several home furnishing manufacturing locations in South China is facing a major reshuffle in 2016. The government has “zero tolerance” for household factories that use fine particles, burn boilers, and use oil-based paint in production, and will investigate and deal with each one found.
It is reported that there are more than thousands of home furnishing companies, large and small, in South China, of which small and medium-sized enterprises account for about 40%. Most of these small and medium-sized enterprises have problems such as aging equipment, production processes and raw materials that do not meet environmental protection requirements, and incomplete pollution control facilities. Supervising and eliminating these small and medium-sized enterprises that do not meet environmentally friendly production requirements will not only help improve local air pollution, but also promote the upgrading of the home furnishing industry and the improvement of the quality of home products. For today’s small and medium-sized enterprises, if they want to survive, it has become urgent to pay attention to green environmental protection requirements.
Green environmental regulations force the home furnishing industry to self-discipline and self-examine
On February 1 this year, the “Technical Requirements for Environmental Labeling Products – Furniture” issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection officially began to be implemented. Environmental labeling is a label placed on a product or package. It is a “certification trademark” and is used to indicate the environmental protection attributes of the product. In the future, wooden furniture, metal furniture, plastic furniture, software furniture, rattan furniture, glass and stone furniture and other furniture and accessories will have an environmental protection label similar to the energy-saving label of home appliances. Having such a label for your home means that the product not only has qualified quality, but also complies with the country’s environmental protection requirements during production and use.
So far, environmental pollution problems during the production and use of household products still exist. After the new version of the environmental label is implemented, household products that can obtain the environmental label will be more green and environmentally friendly. At the same time, the implementation of new environmental labels will help promote technological progress in my country’s home furnishing industry. But from another perspective, this means that the home furnishing field will face more stringent standards and accept more stringent tests.
Just when the country is imposing heavy blows on non-environmentally friendly home furnishing manufacturers, Shenzhen also has stricter green environmental protection requirements – “Finished Furniture and Raw and Auxiliary Materials” Limits of Hazardous Substances”. The first phase, the transition period, starts from January 1, 2017, the date of the release of the standard, to the end of April 2017. Solvent-based coatings and adhesives can still be used for about six months; in the second phase, “the use of solvent-based coatings is prohibited.” “Officially implemented from May 1, 2017. This specification is drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009, proposed by the Shenzhen Municipal Human Settlements Environment Committee, and is under the jurisdiction of the Shenzhen Municipal Market Supervision and Administration Bureau. This specification stipulates the terms and definitions, technical requirements, test methods and inspection rules for finished household products and household raw and auxiliary materials. It is applicable to the finished household products sold and produced in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the raw and auxiliary household materials sold and used in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. The finished household products include Wooden furniture, metal furniture, software furniture, and other types of household furniture can refer to the implementation; household raw and auxiliary materials include adhesives, wood coatings, wood materials, textile fabrics, and leather, except for other types of household raw and auxiliary materials. This specification takes “cannot use solvent-based coatings” as a hard indicator, ensuring the green environmental protection of household products from the source.
With the implementation of multiple environmental protection regulations, it means that environmental protection requirements for home furnishing manufacturers have further increased, thus intensifying industry reshuffle. In the future, only companies that truly meet environmental protection standards can achieve long-term development.
