This equipment with an annual production capacity of 13,000 tons is expected to require an investment of approximately US$150 million. Construction will start in the second quarter of next year and is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2019. WACKER’s Charleston site now employs around 650 people and already produces high-purity polysilicon for the photovoltaic and semiconductor industries.
Wacker Chemistry stated that after the new equipment for fumed silica is completed, WACKER can continue to process silicon tetrachloride, a by-product produced in the polycrystalline silicon production process, into value-added silica products.
